02. NY Fashion Workers Act Passed

The New York Fashion Workers Act was signed into law on Saturday, December 21st. The law will take effect on June 19, 2025.

The passing of this bill comes after a successful two years of lobbying to have the term "creative management" removed from the bill. As a reminder, the inclusion of the term "creative management" would have had the unintended consequence of adversely affecting our membership agencies by resulting in crippling regulation and administrative tasks for all agents, by enforcing unrealistic payment terms, requiring state registration, as well as the deposit of a hefty surety bond which would have been a financial impossibility for many of our small business owners.

While this is a big win for artist management companies, the bill’s language regarding model protections and payment terms would need to be abided by anyone responsible for paying models or modeling agencies directly. Over the coming months we will work together with our legal team to create a resource that will help our community remain compliant with the law once it's in effect.
